Hermès opened as a luxury harness workshop on Rue Basse du Rempart in Paris in 1837.
Its founder, Thierry Hermès, elevated the brand's renown during the reign of Napoleon III as a harness maker to the emperor. His skills were passed down to his sons, who established a workshop and began retail operations at 24 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré in the Elysée district, which remains its main store today. The manufacturing of bags, wallets, and other items, based on their harness-making techniques, marked the beginning of Hermès as we know it.
